Firebird Raceway's traditional season opener! the "Ignitor", 2003 version The New Family likes to have some nitro with their divisonal race, so this year, not only did they bring in an 8 car field of AA/FD's, but also a booked-in Fuel Altered show! Five cars showed up this year for the Chicago-style race, which featured one round of qualifying for the Awful Awfuls, which the two low et's would come back tomorrow, Sunday, for a winner-take-all final.
Gary Read, in the Sullivan & Haight car in the foreground, Mack McCord in the OTHER white T-bucket in the far lane for Saturday's qualifying pass. As you can see, Read has a bunch of dead cylinders, just pumping out raw fuel, which caused the car to shake the tires, get out of the groove and make a serious move towards the left wall. Being the prudent sort, Gary got out of it, and Mack McCord ran a 6.58, putting him as 2nd low ET , and sending him into Sunday's finals.
Read's burnout, and one hard-working Awful Awful editor behind the camera, getting that above shot!
McCord's burnout...
I hate it when the smoke from the burnout in the other lane drifts over...Greg Daebelliehn on Sunday, in the fuel altered final.
Yes, it's that controversial altered from Oregon, Dave Hix. This is Hix's qualifying run on Saturday, which did not get him in the show, as they ate up the rearend on this pass.
Hmm...think *this* might put some stress on the rear axle and gears?
Why, it's a funny Altered! Mack McCord's Gorilla in the pits before the final.
Showin' you his Go-rilla.
Greg Daehbelliehn ponders...
Ricky Ruiz looks shiny...
...front and back.
Ruiz pounds the pavement on Sunday, running his best time,
It's the final...Daehbelliehn slaps that throttle down.
Hey! If I were taller, it would have been the same shot as the one above!
The top end crew at Firebird gives the high five to Daehbelliehn, as he becomes the 2003 Ignitor Fuel Altered champ!
